Reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan - An enormous blast rocked the Afghan capital this morning, five days before the christian louboutin shoes nation's widely anticipated presidential election. So I thought I would spend some time writing a blog about what it is I do and how I do it and how clients can get the most out of it. I’m going to focus on what anybody hiring a designer should think about beforehand, how to choose someone, and how the way a designer works will affect the outcome. Maybe I’ll give away a few trade secrets as well.

The truth is I often find that the people who hire designers don’t quite know what they’re paying for, especially since their nephew is great with Photoshop. What ischristian louboutin pumps it that I do that’s special or different?

Let’s start by talking about what design isn’t (and I’ll get into most of these subjects at greater length later):

Design is not magic, and you should be suspicious of anyone who tries to sell it to you as such. I have personally seen several designers pitch their work as though it’s sorcery – they conjure their ideas from a deep and magical place and deliver them fully formed. Design isn’t about software. Owning a bike doesn’t make you Lance Armstrong, owning a computer doesn’t make you a designer. His skills are extremely useful in a lot of design-related situations, and he has a bright future ahead of him, but there’s a difference between what he can do and what a designer can do.

Design isn’t a single discipline. Although most people mean graphic design when they say designer, there are a lot of subcategories of designers. In web design, you have user interface designers, graphic designers, and information architects all work at designing specific aspects of a project. Most designers tend to start from the graphics sideChristian Loutoutin Boots
of things and then learn the other concepts as they go. As a result, most web designers have a blend of those skill sets. To build an effective website it is essential to have a range of those skills, in the same way that establishing a brand you need more than the ability to draw a neat logo.

Design isn’t about the designer’s vision. There may be times when my loves of distressed type and archaic printing processes overlap with what will best serve a client, but that’s the exception and certainly not a reason to avoid hiring me. Those are solutions to a very narrow range of problems. There are a lot of frustrated artists who work as designers, but the good ones don’t try to make someone else’s brochure/website/CD the vehicle for expressing themselves. The goals of design are different from the goals of art. Not only that, the criteria by which they’re evaluated are completely different. Frustrated artists often make good designers because they have a solid sense of how to work with visual information, but every so often there will be one who is always trying to sneak some of themselves into every project.

So what’s left? What, then, is design? Design is problem solving. Design is a process. Design is about understanding a client’s goals and needs and presenting them with solutions based on that. I’m choosing a particularly broad definition here and specifically leaving out the word “creative”. I think it’s possible for design to be successful and not the least bit creative. A lot of good design balances creative and uncreative elements. But more on that later.

Many fighters have their own personal website that they update themselves as a way of promoting and interacting with their fans or a profile on myspace where fans can leave comments or wish them well on their upcoming fight. I love fantasy sports! I play in a Yahoo Fantasy Football League, where I’m currently in third place. Sadly, LaDainian Tomlinson’s bummed toe has taken its toll on my overall league points. As far as favorite athletes go, Dan Marino will always hold a special place in my heart, but who doesn’t love Peyton Manning. Again, for me it’s identifying with an athlete and liking his personality. As a little girl I grew up watching football and wanted every play to be a passing play. Which again, is brilliant because these guys come into the UFC with a few fights under their belt but already have a fan base because of who they were on the show. I have my personal favorites such as Matt Serra. What a character!

Overall through my favorite MMA fighters are Randy Couture, Matt Hamill, Brian Stann and Gilbert Melendez.

I maintain my blog because I love the sport, I love the lifestyle and with my fiancé being a fighter it’s really turned into an extended family for us. I hope that my blog will be viewed as the top site for MMA from a girl’s perspective. Once those late summer and fall lobsters start hitting the docks, the fear is the new supply will crash prices even further in what's already a glutted market. "I have a strong feeling you'll see prices drop another 50 cents a pound," says Edward Hennessey Jr., president of northern Maine's Machias Savings Bank.

"Most of the fishermen in Maine are self-employed and have been for generations. The average age for a fisherman is about 54 years old. This is all they know, and at this point it's kind of like teaching old dogs new tricks -- myself included." Dassatt is 54.

One concession the Dassatts have made is leaving their traps in the water for a day or two longer and thus making fewer trips. They've been catching more lobsters per trap but using half as much fuel.

But all that does is buy the Dassatts and other lobstermen some time. What they really need is a turnaround in demand, and everyone in the industry seems to believe that starts with changing the way lobster is marketed to consumers.

"Lobsters are a happy food -- something you have for your anniversary or to show off to your girlfriend -- and it's been promoted that way forever," says Albert Carver, who owns five lobster pounds on northern Maine's Beals Island. (A lobster pound is a fenced-off cove used to store caught lobsters in their natural habitat.)

"Nobody goes to the supermarket with lobster on their list," Carver says. "Steak could be $8 a pound, and they're still going to buy it because it's on their list." The way to get lobster on the shopping list, he says, is by moving lobster down market -- from the lobster tank to the frozen food aisle -- and making cheaper, frozen lobster as widely available as frozen shrimp or salmon. "If we're going to win the market back," he says, "it's going to have to happen with price."

We taste tested 13 canned chunk light tunas, in water and oil, and reeled in a few winners

WASHINGTON – The government's popular "cash for clunkers" program may be running out of money after only a matter of days as car shoppers flock to dealerships to take advantage of the rebates.

TheJimmy Choo Sandals White House said Thursday it was assessing its options amid concerns the $1 billion budget for rebates for new car sales may have been depleted. The program officially began last week and has been heavily publicized by automakers and dealers.

Transportation Department officials called lawmakers earlier Thursday to alert them of plans to suspend the program as early as Friday. But a White House official said later the program had not been suspended and they were reviewing their options to keep the program funded.

Whitejimmy choo sale House press secretary Robert Gibbs said they were working to "assess the situation facing what is obviously an incredibly popular program. Auto dealers and consumers should have confidence that all valid CARS transactions that have taken place to date will be honored."

Dubbed the Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS, the program offers owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle, in exchange for scrapping their old vehicle. Congress last month approved the plan to boost auto sales and remove some inefficient cars and trucks from the roads.

TheChristian Loutoutin Boots program was scheduled to last through Nov. 1 or until the money ran out, but few predicted it would be depleted in days. Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through CARS and nearly $96 million had been spent.

But dealers raised concerns about large backlogs in the processing of the deals in the government system. A survey of 2,000 dealers by the National Automobile Dealers Association found about 25,000 deals had not yet been approved by the government, or nearly 13 trades per store.

It suggested that with about 23,000 dealers taking part in the program, car dealers may already have surpassed the 250,000 vehicle sales funded by the $1 billion program.

"There's a significant backlog of 'cash for clunkers' deals that make us question how much funding is still available in the program," said Bailey Wood, a spokesman for the dealers association.

The reports that the CARS program could be suspended created confusion among many dealers, who had showrooms filled with car shoppers looking to scrap their gas guzzlers.

Alan Helfman, general manager of River Oaks Chrysler Jeep in Houston, said he was worried that the government wouldn't pay for some of his clunker deals. His dealership has completed paperwork on about 20 sales under the program, but in some cases the titles haven't been obtained yet or the vehicles aren't on his lot.

"There's no doubt I'm going to get hammered on a deal or two," Helfman said.

The clunkers program was set up to boost U.S. auto sales and help struggling automakers through the worst sales slump in more than a quarter-century. Sales for the first half of the year were down 35 percent from the same period in 2008, and analysts are predicting only a modest recovery during the second half of the year.

So far this year, sales are running under an annual rate of 10 million light vehicles, but as recently as 2007, automakers sold more than 16 million cars and light trucks in the United States.

Lawmakers said they would try to find additional funding for the program, which under the legislation could grow to $4 billion for the funding of up to 1 million new car sales.

Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., who developed the legislation, said he would work with the Obama administration to keep the program going "until it reaches its goal of helping consumers take 1 million gas guzzlers off the road."

The potential for an early flu season without a vaccine against an H1N1 virus that may mutate has worried local health officials.
